  10. ^ The majority of Orthodox, even in North America, view feminism as irrelevant - or at least ill-suited, as a sociopolitical concept, to the Orthodox ethos. There is no popular, widespread movement for the ordination of women to the priesthood and episcopacy, and even the limited push for the ordination of women to the diaconate - which would revive a well-documented tradition of the early and Byzantine Church - eschews the more strident and assertive tones of women’s ordination movements in Western Christian churches. Advocates of greater ecclesial participation for Orthodox women do not speak in terms of “rights,” which is a political rather than theological concept. Rather, congruent with the spiritual and traditional foundations of Orthodox theology, advocates of a restored female diaconate offer arguments based on the church’s tradition, history, and liturgical theology, applying the practices of the past to a modern situation. - An Orthodox Perspective On Feminist Theology, Valerie A. Karras, Encyclopedia of Women and Religion in North America, Ed. Rosemary Skinner Keller, Rosemary Radford Ruether and Marie Cantlon. Vol. 2. Indiana University Press, 2006. p523-530.
