Fukuoka (福岡市, Fukuoka-shi) is a Japanese city in Fukuoka Prefecture on the island of Kyushu. It is the capital city of the prefecture.
It has been recognized as a city designated by government ordinance since 1992.
Hakata Bay, a short distance from Dazaifu, Fukuoka and the Fukuoka area was the landing site of the Mongol invasions of Japan in 1274 and 1281.
Fukuoka is known for its football team, Avispa Fukuoka; and it is also known for its baseball team, the Fukuoka SoftBank Hawks.
