Urbs (-is, f.) est magna perennisque hominum conlocatio urbana.[1][2] Quamquam non adest exactus consensus de modo quo urbs ab oppido distinguitur, multae urbes certum statum administrativum, legitimum, vel historicum, legibus loci constitutum habent.

Maxima mundi metropolis hodie est Tocium in Iaponia, maxima urbs sensu stricto Sanghaevum in Sina.

Urbs in antiquitate

Graeci antiqui multas urbes (Graece πόλις) cognoverant, quorum notissimae erant Athenae, Corynthus, Sparta, Thebae. Apud Romanos per multas aetates, urbs non addito nomine solum Romam, caput imperii, significabat.[3] Vide exempli gratia dictum "ab urbe condita." Roma ipsa erat prima mundi urbs cuius incolarum numerum millionis adaequabat.
