Jimmy Connors defeated Björn Borg 6–4, 3–6, 7–6(11–9), 6–4 in the final to win the Men's Singles tennis title at the 1976 US Open despite scoring fewer points in total (121) than his opponent (123).[1] Manuel Orantes was the defending champion but lost in the quarterfinals to Björn Borg.
